Spaces within was initially written as a solo piece for semi- acoustic guitar played with a bow, but it may be adapted for any instrument capable of producing overtones and harmonics. The piece was developed after an intensive mentorship week with Dutch composer Antoine Beuger in October 2025, emerging from our daily conversations about artistic approaches that draw from what is already present, what surrounds us, and the possibilities they could reveal… like shining light into a dark corner of a room with a torch.

The score invites immersion into the world of natural harmonics, overtones and resonance through careful bowing, slow gestures, and subtle touch. Each pitch is formed from a number of overlapping frequencies, possesses its own interior world, that give it its unique quality, or timbre. The player is invited to uncover these delicate qualities by bowing the string slowly and attentively. Gentle pressure and movement allow new spaces to unfold within the act itself.

The piece is less about creating interesting sounds or expressing emotion, and more about appreciation and re-discovering what already exists within the sound: their relationships and potentials, spaces that unfold through attention, care and affirmation.
